Great Weekend!

Dennis' 50th birthday surprise party was a great success! It was particularly nice to have time to sit and talk to family and friends. Doreen made LOTS of cupcakes and worked 50 in to the design. Everyone was well fed on the most delicious low country boil! Yummy. Wish I had more of that corn on the cob. They even had a cozy fire to keep us warm.

Saturday was wet and wonderful with the Atlanta Bagpipe Concert at Oglethorpe University. Eleven of us ate at the Hudson Grill then drove to the theatre. It was a rousing program showing the talent of lots of pipers and drummers. Keltic Kudzu, folk band, also performed along with the Glencoe Highland dancers. Harry Beadle was a great MC. We had awesome seats and even ran into more friends who were there enjoying the great music.

The rain did not dampen our enthusiasm.

Bagpipes at Elementary school

Victoria took some excellent photos at the children's school and she has already blogged about my visit but I wanted to talk about how much fun it was. The invitation was extended by Crystal, who was formerly Eve's teacher in Pre-K. Crystal is part of a group called Read Across America and she frequently reads at the elementary school and she remembered me from last year at Harmony Grove when I played for Eve's class.

We had a question and answer period in every class and invariably a child would ask why I decided to learn to play the pipes. I would also tell them how the pipes are made and a little about the history of how pipes came to be. The pipes make such "interesting" sounds that it was easy to bring a good bit of humor to the presentation.

I was thrilled with the sweet thank you notes with drawings of bagpipes that the children handmade.

The toy Highland bagpipes are always a good way to teach the children and Eve loved to hold them. The Shuttle pipes were the ones I played. It was such a fun day with Victoria and to have chance to meet all the teachers and all the children in class with Rachel, Eve and Noah.

I used the time to also teach the children about the Georgia Tartan and it's history. Danny Boy was an obvious choice for St. Patrick's day and some other selections. We started the day at 10 am and after several performances we ended about 3pm.

Victoria treated us to lunch at the Blue Rooster where the food is Fabulous! I only wish I could spend more days like this, especially with Victoria.
