In the photo you can see Jim had fun giving Noah a push on the swing. As a child, one of my favorite activities was was swinging. I had a wonderful swing in my backyard. It seemed as if Summer was much longer then. The Sun also was hotter on the Alabama dirt and I avoided shoes until school started (after labor day). Of course, Victoria says that we didn't need to go to school as many weeks as children today because there wasn't as much history to learn (sweet child isn't she). My diploma was not etched in stone either.
We played Tarzan games, Annie Oakley games. I loved my BB gun and target shooting. We made our own See Saws out of lumber we found in the yard from building projects of my Daddy's. I had a slide and we would fill basins with water to dip our hot and blistered feet in. We played outside all day WITHOUT constant adult supervision but we always knew that Mother was in the house nearby if we had a problem (like finding a snake near the play area). We didn't have fire ants in Alabama in those days. They had not yet migrated that far North from South America.
When I was about 10 or 12, two women with 3 children and a grandmother moved in the house near ours. They were from Germany. The teenage daughter, Erica, loved to play games and was a lot of company to me. The other girls were much younger. The grandmother only spoke German. They were very good neighbors. Every time a plane flew over the area, Erica would run and hide. She had learned that from growing up in Germany. Her Grandmother was so afraid because of her experiences during WWII. They thought the planes were going to bomb their house. My mother explained how life must have been in war torn Germany for their family. It was certainly a learning experience for me as a child. I realized how fortunate I was not to have lived in such circumstances.
Well, it's Friday and we are looking forward to our weekend. Now that the drought is over our yard is bouncing back. The Lantana's are looking good, as they do each year. I just wish the roses would bloom more. The rose climbing vines have the BIGGEST THORNS I have ever seen and boy do they hurt.
I hope y'all enjoy the weekend and that your flowers are blooming and bringing you joy!
Be kind,
Sue

Your memories are just SO inspiring!!! We all lived much simpler lives back "in the day", didn't we???
Have a restful and peaceful weekend while you're enjoying those adorable grandchildren.

What a great story from your youth. Thanks for sharing!
I keep trying to do that "No supervision" thing with my kids, but they keep finding me to complain.

Hi!!
I am glad you liked the music it is from the Bollywood film "Jodha Akbar", the music was written/composed by A R Rahman, the same guy who did the music for the award winning "Slum Dog Millionaire". He really does some fabulous stuff. The movie is also very well done and the story is simple yet...well okay to watch.
Thanks for the memories! You should write for the local paper again, like the old days. Let's keep our summer fun...
I love it when you take us on a memory lane trip. Double ugh to the fire ants! Back then we only had to deal with mosquitos (w/out west nile), ticks (w/out lyme disease) and the worst of all CHIGGERS!
